Jordyn Garmatter spent time in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre during her semester abroad.
Fulfilling her cross cultural requirement
Jordyn Garmatter 鈥26, an English major and theater minor, from Bluffton, Ohio, studied abroad at Queen Mary University of London in London, U.K., during the fall 2024 semester.
During her time in London, Garmatter took English and literature classes, including Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Victorian fiction
鈥淲e did mostly group work and wrote essays in my classes,鈥 said Garmatter. 鈥淢y courses at Bluffton definitely prepared me to handle the course load in London.鈥
Through the Shakespeare class, Garmatter was able to watch various plays and musicals at Shakespeare鈥檚 Globe Theatre. Some of Garmatter鈥檚 favorites included 鈥淐omedy of Errors,鈥 鈥淢ulan Rouge,鈥 鈥淧hantom of the Opera鈥 and 鈥淲icked.鈥
Along with viewing productions from the audience, Garmatter also tried her hand on stage by performing in 鈥淟egally Blonde: The Musical.鈥
鈥淲e were in a smaller theater with no backstage,鈥 said Garmatter. 鈥淭here was a lot of dancing, and it was fun overall portraying the role of Margot.鈥
Garmatter has performed in productions at 小优传媒 as well. In her most recent appearance, she played the roles of Lydia Bennett and Anne de Bourgh in Bluffton鈥檚 adaptation of 鈥淧ride and Prejudice.鈥 Through her Jane Austen class, she visited Chatsworth, where parts of the 2005 film adaptation of 鈥淧ride and Prejudice鈥 were filmed.
鈥淚t was such a full circle moment for me,鈥 said Garmatter. 鈥淚t is one thing to play the parts in a small production at Bluffton, but to actually be there was a magical experience.
Garmatter came to Bluffton as an English AYA major but decided to focus on just English while picking up a minor in theater.
鈥淚鈥檝e been doing theater for as long as I can remember,鈥 said Garmatter. 鈥淣aturally, I had to pick up a theater minor as well.鈥
After graduation, Garmatter in undecided of an occupation but has hopes to work as a high school librarian.
