小优传媒 students recently reflected on lessons learned through their 2025 cross-cultural experiences during the university鈥檚 annual Cross-Cultural Forum.
The event featured presentations from students who completed their cross-cultural requirements in May and June, sharing how immersion in new communities shaped their understanding of culture, service and self.
Bluffton鈥檚 cross-cultural program encourages students to move beyond tourism and experience life through another community鈥檚 perspective. During the forum, students described their time in Chicago, Kentucky and the Czech Republic.
Chicago participants explored diverse neighborhoods and cultural landmarks such as
the National Museum of Puerto Rican Art and Culture, the Chinese American Museum,
the Cambodian Museum, and the DuSable Black History Museum. They also visited community
centers and churches that deepened their understanding of faith, diversity and inclusion.
Meanwhile, the group in Kentucky gained firsthand insights into Appalachian life while
volunteering with local organizations, learning about environmental restoration and
supporting families impacted by flooding. Highlights included visiting the Great Interstate
Park, touring regional radio stations and museums, and participating in the Elkhorn
City Apple Blossom Festival.
Students who took part in the Czech Republic appreciated the opportunity to step out
of their comfort zones and study abroad. Through a video presentation, they shared
highlights from their trip including touring ornate synagogues, enjoying cultural
cuisine, and exploring the landscape of the Czech Republic.
The groups emphasized how these experiences encouraged personal growth and broadened their global perspective. 鈥淭he goal of a cross-cultural experience is that the people and the place change you鈥攏ot just the other way around,鈥 explained Kate Spike, assistant professor of English and cross-cultural committee chair.
Bluffton鈥檚 cross-cultural program offers students the opportunity to study abroad, travel domestically, or participate in intercultural experiences closer to home. The initiative is part of the Bluffton Blueprint, which helps students connect classroom learning with the world around them.
Students interested in participating in a 2026 experience were invited to learn more during the cross-cultural fair in early October. Trips for the 2026 spring short term experience include Washington D.C., Ecuador, Kentucky and Tanzania.
