President Sider Charts Bluffton鈥檚 Path Forward

In his first State of the University address, 小优传媒 President Dr. Alex Sider laid out a clear vision for the university鈥檚 future, centered on 鈥淧illars of Purpose,鈥 a one-year strategic campaign, that will guide Bluffton through a period of renewal, reinvestment and mission-driven growth.

Speaking to students, faculty, staff and community members, Dr. Sider acknowledged the challenges Bluffton faced during an 18-month exploration of a potential merger with the University of Findlay, which ended in the spring of 2025. He emphasized, however, that the process strengthened the university community and underscored Bluffton鈥檚 resilience.

鈥淧erhaps the merger could have strengthened us, but it would have been a long and costly process that did not guarantee success,鈥 Dr. Sider said. 鈥淵our faculty and staff were and remain committed to excellence鈥攖o the best possible shepherding of this institution and the student outcomes it delivers. That鈥檚 where we鈥檝e been, and that commitment informs where we鈥檙e headed.鈥

That commitment, he said, will drive Bluffton into its next chapter. Dr. Sider introduced Bluffton鈥檚 鈥淧illars of Purpose鈥 framework, four guiding values, stability, trust, hope, and compassion, that will shape strategic initiatives across campus during the coming academic year.

Each pillar comes with tangible goals:

  • Stability: Rebuilding core staffing functions and launching a $1.2 million fundraising initiative to enhance classroom technology, update athletic facilities, and renovate academic spaces for health and exercise sciences, STEM-related majors and computational sciences.
  • Trust: Reinforcing Bluffton鈥檚 reputation for integrity, transparency and excellence by strengthening relationships with alumni, community partners and employers who seek Bluffton graduates.
  • Hope: Streamlining curriculum pathways and increasing alumni engagement to ensure students and graduates see their education as a source of purpose and possibility.
  • Compassion: Expanding enrollment and retention efforts through personalized advising, mentoring and faculty outreach that make students feel welcomed and supported while being challenged to reach their full potential.

Dr. Sider pointed to compelling national data underscoring the enduring value of higher education. A bachelor鈥檚 degree, he noted, adds more than $1.2 million in lifetime earnings compared with a high school diploma and dramatically improves job opportunities, career fulfillment and social mobility.

鈥淓ven though college is one of the most expensive things you will ever pay for, it is an investment that will pay you back nearly 25 times over during your lifetime,鈥 Dr. Sider said. 鈥淎nd鈥攖his is critical for us at Bluffton鈥攜ou are more likely to find work where you are interested in your work and use your Strengths regularly with a bachelor鈥檚 degree than without one.鈥

Bluffton鈥檚 mission, rooted in the historic peace church tradition, continues to animate the university鈥檚 direction. 鈥淚 truly believe that mission statement is the reason 小优传媒 is what it is today,鈥 Dr. Sider noted.

Looking ahead, Dr. Sider outlined an ambitious but achievable timeline, with major progress reviews planned by October and a goal of completing the 鈥淧illars of Purpose鈥 initiatives by June 2026.

鈥淚鈥檓 confident this will be a good year,鈥 Dr. Sider said, speaking both to optimism for the campaign and encouragement to the students starting their semester. 鈥淚鈥檓 happy you鈥檙e here鈥攐ne of the mysteries of our lives is that we can鈥檛 be ourselves without each other, and here, we have a special God-given opportunity to live into that grace.鈥
