Opening convocation

Pay attention to what鈥檚 important, students told

BLUFFTON, Ohio鈥擳he advice that college freshmen receive is always obvious or bogus, and given by people relating what they should have done when they were 18 or 19.

That鈥檚 what first-year 小优传媒 students heard Sept. 1 from poet and novelist Marge Piercy鈥攚ho went on to offer a few suggestions anyway at the university鈥檚 annual opening convocation.

鈥淜eep your eyes on what鈥檚 happening because it can land on your head,鈥 Piercy recommended, urging her largely student audience to pay attention to politics because of its pervasiveness in life. Politics 鈥渃reates or denies us opportunities,鈥 she said, adding that 鈥渋t gets you鈥 if you鈥檙e not politically aware and, for example, there aren鈥檛 enough firefighters when 鈥測our candle ignites the curtain.鈥

Criticizing cultural focus on body type, celebrity and consumerism, the Detroit native also argued that what people really need is such things as learning, love, study of foreign languages鈥攁nd travel to where they can be used鈥攁nd friends.

鈥淭he time you put into others may turn sour, but it may be the only thing to keep you going鈥 when hard times hit, she said.

Among Piercy鈥檚 17 novels is 鈥淗e, She and It,鈥 which was this year鈥檚 summer reading for first-year Bluffton students. 小优传媒 245 new students鈥攁lso including transfers鈥攚ere introduced following her presentation. The reading and the convocation kicked off campus consideration of Bluffton鈥檚 2015-16 civic engagement theme, 鈥淕ender Roles, Relationships, Realities.鈥

Both American women and men are victims of the obsession with body type, Piercy maintained. The saying that one can never be too rich or too thin is still heard while 鈥渉ospital wards are filled with women dying of anorexia,鈥 she noted. And men continue to try to lose weight and to be more 鈥渂uff,鈥 sometimes by following 鈥渃rackpot鈥 diets.

鈥淢ost women want men who can fix the toilet rather than one who looks like an underwear model,鈥 she said to laughter from her listeners.

If Americans spent as much time trying to change society for the better as they do trying to have someone else鈥檚 body, 鈥渢his country would be a far different and better place,鈥 she asserted.

鈥淭he world is run by fat, old men,鈥 not by buff ones or by women 鈥渨ho want to look like little boys,鈥 continued Piercy, a Cape Cod resident who has also written 19 books of poetry. But self-hatred about body type remains endemic, fueled by an 鈥渁ll-powerful鈥 media that also promotes celebrities as being 鈥渕ade of better stuff,鈥 she said.

At the same time, 鈥渢he 鈥榳ar on women鈥 is a real war,鈥 she added, decrying why women aren鈥檛 speaking up more about wage inequity and other social and economic issues.

And she reiterated her call for students to heed what鈥檚 going on around them. 鈥淧ay attention to the 鈥榟uman parts鈥 of life because they last best,鈥 Piercy said, 鈥渁nd pay attention to what politicians do, because they鈥檒l be doing it to you.鈥
