Choral Director

POSITION SUMMARY:
This 10-hour/week staff position is responsible for leading a student and community
choir, planning and conducting rehearsals and performances, and supporting recruitment
efforts for the choral program. The Choral Director will play a key role in building
an inclusive and vibrant choral experience that reflects the university鈥檚 mission
and values.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum:
- Bachelor鈥檚 degree in music, choral conducting, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience conducting choral ensembles.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with college students and community members of varied musical backgrounds.
- Preferred:
- Master鈥檚 degree in choral conducting or music education.
- Experience in recruitment or outreach within a college or community setting.
- Familiarity with liberal arts institutions and their educational values.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct weekly rehearsals and direct performances of the university鈥檚 student and community choir.
- Select appropriate repertoire that aligns with the skill level and interests of choir members and reflects a diversity of musical traditions.
- Collaborate with the appropriate university personnel on concert scheduling and performance logistics.
- Actively recruit student participants for the choral program through outreach, audition coordination, and engagement with prospective students.
- Foster an inclusive, supportive, and engaging rehearsal environment for students and community members.
- Promote the choir鈥檚 visibility and presence both on campus and in the local community.
- Coordinate with accompanists, instrumentalists, and guest performers as needed.
- Manage communication with choir members, including rehearsal schedules, performance dates, and expectations.
- Collaborate with appropriate personnel at other areas colleges and universities on joint programming (e.g., with University of Findlay on Handel鈥檚 Messiah).

- This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods during rehearsals and performances.
- The role involves regular movement, including conducting gestures, setting up or adjusting chairs and music stands, and occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds) of choral equipment or materials.
- Must be able to clearly communicate with choir members in a variety of settings, including speaking, singing, and hearing spoken or musical cues.
- Rehearsals and performances typically take place in a classroom, recital hall, or performance venue, which may require evening or occasional weekend hours.
- The work environment is generally indoors and may include moderate noise levels consistent with musical rehearsals and performances.
COMPENSATION:
Commensurate with education and experience within the university pay scale.
